Gary Keedy moves to Surrey from Lancashire ? Cricket News Update
Left-arm Lancashire off-spinner Gary Keedy on Friday signed a two-year contract with Surrey, ending his 18-year-long affiliation with the Red Rose county. The signing will say him stay at the Kia Oval until the end of 2014 season.
Keedy started his cricketing career at Old Trafford back in 1995. He was capped by the Red Rose county in 2000 and was awarded a benefit season in 2009. The 37-year-old spinner, who claimed over 800 wickets in more than 400 appearances for Lancashire, said he needed to move ?to fulfil ambitions?.
?I?ve had a fantastic 18 seasons at Lancashire and would like to thank all the players, staff and members there for everything they have done for me,? said the Yorkshire-born left-arm orthodox bowler.
?I have reached the time in my career when I need to move on in order to fulfil my ambitions and I am very excited to be joining Surrey at this time,? he added further.
When asked about the most memorable moment during his stay at Old Trafford, the left-armer said that winning the 2011 LV = County Championship was an incredible moment of his career, and will stay with him forever.
Warwickshire county had approached the left-arm spinner in the mid of 2011 season, but he opted to stay with Lancashire. Keedy finished that season with 61 wickets, to help Red Rose county win its first outright Championship title since 1934.
Keedy?s signing gives Surrey county another spin bowling option alongside right-arm off-spinner Gareth Batty. He will also provide valuable experience and guidance to youngsters Freddie van den Bergh and Zafar Ansari.
Surrey?s Team Director Chris Adams said that the Yorkshire-born offie has been one of the leading bowlers in the county cricket over the last ten years, and hoped him to take that form to Kia Oval.
?I?m delighted he?ll be joining us for the next two seasons,? said Adams after signing a two-year deal with Keedy. ?His fantastic ability with the ball, he will play a valuable role in the dressing room throughout the year? helping to impart his experience to the younger members of our squad,? the Surrey team director concluded.
