At 6 months, development of children with autism like those without

Tuesday, October 30, 2012

The development of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is much like that of children without ASD at 6 months of age, but differs afterwards. That's the main finding of the largest prospective, longitudinal study to date comparing children with early and later diagnosis of ASD with children without ASD. The study appears in the journal Child Development and has implications for clinical work, public health, and policy.

The study was conducted by researchers at the Kennedy Krieger Institute, the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and the Aging Brain Center at the Institute for Aging Research and Hebrew SeniorLife at Harvard Medical School.

The study sought to learn more about the patterns of development during the first three years of life in children with and without ASD to better understand how ASD can be detected as early as possible. It is the first prospective study to examine early-onset ASD (by 14 months) and later-onset ASD (after 14 months) over the first three years, pinpointing where development looks the same and where it diverges.

ASD comprises a group of disorders of brain development that affects about 1 in 88 American children.

Researchers looked at 235 primarily White children with and without an older sibling with autism, testing them at regular intervals from ages 6 to 36 months. Using standardized and play-based assessments, they tested children's fine motor skills, understanding of spoken language, and spoken language production skills. They also measured how often the children shared their emotions and initiated communication with others.

The study looked at early development across three groups: children without ASD, children with ASD who were identified by 14 months, and children with ASD identified after 14 months. At 6 months, development within the early- and later-identified ASD groups was comparable to each other and to the non-ASD group. At 14 and 18 months, the early-identified ASD group performed below the later-identified ASD group in many aspects of development. By 24 to 36 months, the two groups showed similar levels of development.

"Results show that ASD has a preclinical phase when detecting it may be difficult," explains Rebecca Landa, director of the Kennedy Krieger Institute's Center for Autism and Related Disorders and the study's lead author. "In some children with ASD, early signs of developmental disruption may not be ASD-specific.

"Routinely administering general developmental screeners, such as the Ages and Stages Questionnaire, should begin in infancy, complemented by ASD-specific screeners by 14 months," suggests Landa. "Screening should be repeated through early childhood. If concerning signs of delay associated with ASD are observed in a child who scores normally on standardized tests, further assessment is warranted."

Superstorm Likely to Hit New, Used Car Buyers in the Wallet ...

Cars float out of a flooded garage in Manhattan after Superstorm Sandy drove record floodwaters into the city. Photo courtesy Ray Wert, Jalopnik.

With much of the Eastern Seaboard still digging out and drying out from Superstorm Sandy estimates now put the damage at anywhere up to $50 billion, perhaps more.? But in the weeks to come, even consumers as far away as the West Coast could feel the pinch.

That is likely to be especially true for car buyers.? Early estimates suggest that tens, perhaps hundreds of thousands of vehicles were damaged to the point they will need to be replaced.? And that is likely to drive up prices for both new and used vehicles in the weeks and months ahead, experts warn.

Your Auto News Center!

If there?s a positive side for consumers it could mean better prices for those looking to trade in a car. For the industry, it?s likely to add even more momentum to the U.S. automotive market?s ongoing recovery.

The extent of the damage from the superstorm remains to be seen. But experts are already trying to make some comparisons to the trio of hurricanes that slashed through the Gulf Coast region in 2005, destroying an estimated 640,000 vehicles.

?The damage from this storm was more widespread across a more populous area than was hit by Katrina, so the number of vehicles that will need to be replaced will likely be much bigger,? warns Ricky Beggs, vice president of the Black Book, a major source of pricing information on used, as well as new, vehicles.

In fact, the impact will have a ?ripple effect in other parts of the country? as dealers and customers in storm-damaged regions race to find replacement vehicles.

The first measure of the impact, suggests Beggs, will likely become apparent at the 62 wholesale automotive auctions covered by the Black Book each week. He anticipates that dealers on the East Coast will significantly increase their bidding and likely grab vehicles that would have otherwise gone to the Midwest, South or even to the Pacific Coast.

Complicating matters, used vehicles already were in short supply because of declining sales of new vehicles during the Great Recession of the last four years.? Prices had already been nudging record levels for much of 2012 and Beggs predicts there will be another ?bump? in the months ahead.

?We may be seeing anything from $200 to $600 depending on how much the need is,? he says, adding that there could be especially strong demand for pickups and full-size vans used by contractors and repair crews ? not only to replace vehicles damaged by the storm but ?because there?ll be demand for services to repair the damages from the storm, so someone who might have had one truck may now need two.?

New car prices may also be heading up, the Black Book editor cautions, especially in markets with high lease penetration, such as the Boston area.? Those customers, he anticipates, will be more likely to replace damaged vehicles with new ones.? How many other motorists buy new vehicles could depend on whether they?re covered by insurance ? and how much they get in a settlement, experts caution.

But automakers could also face demand for more vehicles from new car dealers whose lots were damaged. So, while the storm resulted in a short-term sales dip in much of the Eastern third of the U.S., the mid-term focus is much more upbeat. (Click Here for more on that story.)

And the story isn?t entirely bad for consumers, says Beggs. -?It might be a good time,? he adds, ?even this week,? for getting maximum value for a trade-in as dealers scramble to line up used vehicles to replace those destroyed by Superstorm Sandy.

Diplomat: Texas agents should have seen people

(AP) ? Texas law enforcement agents were close enough to a pickup truck to see it was carrying people, not drugs, before one opened fire, killing two Guatemalan immigrants, a diplomat said Tuesday.

Texas Department of Public Safety officials have said the helicopter crew believed the truck was carrying a drug load and they shot to stop it.

But after interviewing seven surviving illegal immigrants, Alba Caceres, Guatemala's consul in McAllen, said there was agreement that the helicopter was 450 to 600 feet away when a trooper inside fired in an attempt to disable the fleeing vehicle. She said the trooper should have been able to see the people inside.

"They all saw it (the helicopter)," Caceres said. "All of them, including those riding up front because they were stuck against the window."

Along with the driver, four passengers were riding in the cab ? three of them crammed behind the front seat, she said. The other six passengers, including the two who were killed, were in the truck's bed, covered with a sheet.

Caceres had said Monday that her skepticism was building that a helicopter could fire on a vehicle without seeing people stuffed into the cabin and bed. "Neither you nor I believe it," she said.

A DPS spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Jose Leonardo Coj Cumar, 32, and Marcos Antonio Castro Estrada, 29, were killed. Coj was a father of three who was traveling to the United States because his eldest son needed surgery to repair an arm injured cutting fire wood, Caceres said. Castro was a father of two whose wife is three months pregnant. Both men were from San Martin Jilotepeque, about an hour outside of the Guatemalan capital.

Caceres was awaiting death certificates that would allow the bodies to be taken back to Guatemala.

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department game wardens spotted the truck Thursday near La Joya and called for help when the driver wouldn't stop. The DPS helicopter responded and joined the chase.

DPS has said the crew believed the truck was carrying a load of drugs when the trooper tried to disable it by shooting out a tire on a rural, gravel road.

Caceres has made a formal request for an investigation. The Texas Rangers, an arm of DPS that often assists other agencies in officer-involved shootings, is leading the probe.

DPS has said the troopers suspected the pickup was carrying a "typical covered drug load," and the driver was going at reckless speeds. Agency regulations say troopers are allowed to use force when defending themselves or someone else from serious harm or death. Shooting at vehicles is justified to disable a vehicle or when deadly force is deemed necessary.

The Rio Grande Valley Equal Voice Network, a group of community-based organizations, has scheduled a Thursday news conference and prayer vigil at the site of the shooting.

The immigrants' families also have been concerned because they took out high-interest loans from someone in their community to pay the smugglers and it will be difficult to pay that money back now that their relatives are in U.S. custody rather than working in the U.S., Caceres said.

The loans ranged from $2,500 to more than $6,000 at interest rates of 9 percent to 10 percent per month, she said.

"You always expect that a coyote (smuggler) will abandon you," Caceres said. "You expect that organized crime will kidnap you. You expect that common criminals will assault you. But you would never expect that a United States authority would take your life."

Leopard Seals Suck Up Dinner

Like whales, this Antarctic predator can strain small prey from the water with sieve-like teeth

The leopard seal (Hydrurga leptonyx) is one of Antarctica?s top predators. It kills penguins and smaller seals by biting them with sharp canine teeth and repeatedly smashing them against the ocean surface to flay and dismember them. But it now seems that this seal is also equipped to tackle smaller prey.

David Hocking from Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, and his colleagues have shown that the leopard seal eats krill like a whale, by sucking them into its mouth and sieving them through special teeth. Other scientists had predicted this behaviour from the shape and arrangement of the seal?s teeth, but this is the first time that it has been observed and filmed. The researchers' results are published in Polar Biology.

By switching between two feeding styles, the leopard seal can dine from both the top and bottom of the Southern Ocean?s food web. ?This is equivalent to a lion hunting down zebras, but also regularly feasting on ants or termites,? says Erich Fitzgerald from Museum Victoria, Melbourne, who was involved in the study.

?You?d expect that leopard seals would sacrifice something in not specializing on either large or small prey, but the authors persuasively argue that it is a dual specialist,? says Alexander Werth, a biologist from Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia. ?This helps to explain why leopard seals are so successful.?

From whale to seal
Hocking, Fitzgerald and Alistair Evans from Monash University studied leopard seals because the animals' trident-shaped postcanine teeth are similar to those of ancient fossil whales, such as Janjucetus, and the researchers were interested in the feeding habits of these whales. Because the seals were thought to use their postcanine teeth to strain krill from the water, it seemed possible that prehistoric whales did too. But as Hocking searched the literature to confirm this, ?it became apparent that nobody had ever actually observed leopard seals underwater [while they fed] on small prey like krill.?

To do that, Hocking travelled to Taronga Zoo in Sydney, Australia, the only institution in the world that houses leopard seals. Once there, he presented the resident seals, Casey and Sabine, with four small fish sticking headfirst out of a plastic box. At her very first go, Sabine sucked a fish out and expelled the excess water through the sides of her mouth. Hocking called up his team: ?Yep, they do it, all right!?

Casey and Sabine repeatedly used the same technique. Their thick lips allowed them to create suction, and their interlocking trident-shaped teeth imprisoned ingested fish or krill when the animals blew out the ingested water. California sea lions lack such complex teeth ? when the same fish-primed box was presented to them, they often blew their prey out of the sides of their mouth along with the water.

There is indirect evidence that wild leopard seals behave in the same way as the two captive seals. The team examined the skulls of 26 wild-caught adults and found that, whereas their gripping canines were often worn down, the postcanines showed fewer signs of wear, consistent with their role as sieves.

Although the team saw the captive seals sucking only one fish at a time, it seems likely that the animals could ingest krill en masse by using their flexible necks to strike at the heart of a shoal. Krill can constitute up to 83% of a leopard seal's diet in regions in which larger prey are in short supply. One individual that was dissected was found to have more than 10,000 freshly caught krill in its stomach. ?That?s a lot of krill to catch one at a time!? says Fitzgerald.

Home to Tintin and Smurfs, Belgium looks to reinvigorate comic industry

The 'home of the comic book,' Belgium wielded outsized influence in the comics industry until the 1980s. Now it's trying to regain that sway via government-supported innovation.

It may now be dominated by American superheros and Japanese manga, but the comic book industry was once associated with no country more than Belgium. Through much of the last century, this small, Western European nation played an outsized role in shaping comics through iconic characters like Tintin and the Smurfs.

But over the past few decades, the industry has fallen on hard times. Now, Belgium is fighting to regain its influence by positioning itself as a center of innovation and excellence for the rest of the industry.

?There is no reason why we won?t have more great authors, because we have very good [comic book art] schools, and these schools discover much new and interesting talent,? says Thierry Bellefroid, a comic book critic and historian.

?On the creative level, the innovations that have been started here aren?t yet finished yet, but they are in the process of changing the comic book market.?

'Home of the comic book'

In the industry, Belgium is referred to as the ?home of the comic book.? The title has its roots in the 1920s, when Belgian artists started to blaze a trail of innovation in comic book art. They invented the speech bubble, for example, as well as the drawing technique called ?Ligne Claire? (or ?clear line?), which moved comic books from cartoonish blobs of color to a sharper kind of realism. They debuted the weekly comic strip magazine format with titles like Spirou and Tintin, selling, at one point, as many as 250,000 copies each week.

?The Belgian comic book became so famous and established because of the success of Tintin,? says Mr. Bellefroid.

Tintin, which still sells more than 1 million comic books a year worldwide, was the industry leader between the 1920s and the 1970s. It helped position Belgium as No. 1 in comic books, a country producing about 80 percent of all comics in Europe by the 1970s. But by the 1980s, Belgium had become a victim of its own initial successes.

?Tintin and other big Belgian comics couldn?t reinvent themselves because they had developed a very clear, loyal fan base and they were also trapped in a very Catholic Belgium at the time,? says Bellefroid. ?This is how Belgium got its market share eaten up, initially by new, edgier French comics.?

It was not only French comic strip magazines like ?Pilote? that began to nudge Belgium aside, but American comic-book publishing giants like DC and Marvel also began to impinge on Belgium?s European market share. More recently, new centers of comic art innovation, like Japan and Argentina, have emerged.

In parallel, as Western economies globalized, most of the Belgian publishing houses were bought up by multinationals, so that today, the business side of the comic book industry is mainly controlled from Paris or London.

Sales among these comic book publishing majors have been on the decline for the past five to 10 years, accentuated by the eurocrisis. Most of the erstwhile Belgian leaders in the weekly comic magazine format have folded, with just Spirou remaining, and its sales have dropped from 280,000 a week in the early 1990s to just 150,000 today.

NHL on ice: All games canceled through November

NEW YORK (AP) ? It will be December before the NHL returns to the ice, and that is a best-case scenario.

With no deal in place, and no plans to resume negotiations with the players' association, the NHL on Friday canceled its entire slate of games through the end of November.

Once a league deadline to reach a deal that would allow for a full regular season passed on Thursday, cuts to the schedule were inevitable. The NHL wasted little time in wiping out over a quarter of its games.

In all, 326 regular-season games from Oct. 11 through Nov. 30 were lost ? amounting to 26.5 percent of the schedule.

"The National Hockey League deeply regrets having to take this action," deputy commissioner Bill Daly said in a statement. "By presenting a proposal to the NHLPA that contemplated a fair division of revenues and was responsive to player concerns regarding the value of their contracts, we had hoped to be able to forge a long-term collective bargaining agreement that would have preserved an 82-game regular season for our fans. Unfortunately, that did not occur.

"We acknowledge and accept that there is joint responsibility in collective bargaining and, though we are profoundly disappointed that a new agreement has not been attained to this point, we remain committed to achieving an agreement that is fair for the players and the clubs ? one that will be good for the game and our fans."

The union attempted to get the league back to the bargaining table this week, but was rebuffed when it asked that talks take place without preconditions. The NHL would only agree to meet again if the players' association used the league's previous proposal as a framework or offered a new one.

"The league officially informed us today that they have withdrawn their latest proposal and have cancelled another slate of regular-season games," union executive director Donald Fehr said in a statement. "This is deeply disappointing for all hockey fans and everyone who makes their living from hockey, including the players. But it comes as no surprise."

Fehr met with players on Friday night before they played in a charity game in Rosemont, Ill.

"The only thing I'll say about the conversation is, and we repeatedly get asked, 'What is there in the NHL offer that moved in our direction?'" Fehr said. "My problem is all I can do is shrug my shoulders, because I don't know what it is.

"Nothing they've done over the several past weeks has been very much of a surprise. One thing sort of follows another. It looks like that's what's been done in the other disputes in the other sports. It's a shame. Hopefully we'll finally get down to serious negotiations one of these days."

The dispute is all too similar to the 2004-05 lockout that led to the cancellation of that entire hockey season ? the first time a North American professional sports league lost a complete campaign to a labor dispute.

Reaching a new deal potentially became even tougher Friday, because of the NHL's removal of its offer ? one that included a 50-50 split of hockey-related revenues and one Commissioner Gary Bettman called the league's best.

Whether any of the canceled games can be rescheduled in the event of a quick settlement remains to be seen. Daly told the AP in an email that if a deal is reached, the league will try to play as many games as possible.

"Having said that, once clubs begin releasing dates and rebooking their buildings, as they will be free to do for the month of November, the process will obviously get more difficult and complicated," he wrote.

The league had previously canceled games through Nov. 1 in two earlier rounds of cuts. A quick decision on the status of the New Year's Day outdoor Winter Classic and the All-Star game later in January isn't expected, Daly said.

"They're going to keep exercising the power that they have to be able to lock us out, and the thought that they can cancel games to try to sway us their way," Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews said. "We'll see what happens in the next little while and see where it goes from there."

Last week, the NHL offered a 50-50 split of hockey-related revenues, which exceeded $3 billion last season, but that proposal was rejected by the union. The players responded with three counteroffers, all of which would get the sides to a 50-50 deal, but the league quickly turned them down.

The NHL proposal was contingent on the league playing a full 82-game season, beginning on Nov. 2, which now won't happen.

"To be honest with you, more than anything it seems like it's more of a scare tactic to us," Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane said. "The only reason why is they can cancel those games. I don't think it really means too much."

Players earned 57 percent of revenue in the recently expired contract, in which a salary cap was included for the first time. Owners originally sought to bring that number below 50 percent this time around before the most recent offer of 50-50.

Fehr said he spoke to the NHL on Friday and that the sides have conversations regularly, even though they haven't scheduled another time to meet.

"I believe it doesn't matter how much we try to reason with them or negotiate," Toews said. "I saw it in the meeting room last week, where we worked there. Don and everyone worked very hard in coming up with those three different proposals and they didn't even have the courtesy to look at it for more than five minutes or even to discuss it. There was no discussion.

"As has been proven over time, they're just on a timeline, and they're waiting to see how much they can squeeze us for. I don't know what's going to happen in the next week or so, but as players we've stood up. We've stayed together this whole time and we've worked very hard at trying to negotiate. That's as much as we can do at this point."

There is a major divide between the sides over how to deal with existing player contracts. The union wants to ensure that those are all paid in full without affecting future contracts between teams and players.

Bettman expressed a willingness to discuss the "make whole" provisions on existing contracts, but only if the economic portions of the league's offer are accepted first by the union.

"Last week the owners gave us what amounts to a 'take-it-or-leave-it' proposal," Fehr said. "We responded with the framework for three proposals on the players' share, each of which moved significantly, toward their stated desire for a 50-50 split of HRR, with the only condition being that they honor contracts they have already signed. Honoring contracts signed between owners and players is a reasonable request. Unfortunately, after considering them for only 10 minutes they rejected all of our proposals."

This lockout, the third of Bettman's tenure as commissioner, began Sept. 16.

"We have repeatedly advised the owners that the players are prepared to sit down and negotiate on any day, with no preconditions. The owners refused," Fehr said. "They apparently are only interested in meeting if we first agree to everything in their last offer, except for perhaps a few minor tweaks and discussion of their 'make whole' provision.

"The message from the owners seems to be: if you don't give us exactly what we want, there is no point in talking. They have shown they are very good at delivering deadlines and demands, but we need a willing partner to negotiate. We hope they return to the table in order to get the players back on the ice soon."

DUCK, N.C. (AP) ? A year after being walloped by Hurricane Irene, residents rushed to put away boats, harvest crops and sandbag boardwalks Friday as the Eastern Seaboard braced for a rare megastorm that experts said would cause much greater havoc.

Hurricane Sandy, moving north from the Caribbean, was expected to make landfall Monday night near the Delaware coast, then hit two winter weather systems as it moves inland, creating a hybrid monster storm that could bring nearly a foot of rain, high winds and up to 2 feet of snow. Experts said the storm would be wider and stronger than last year's Irene, which caused more than $15 billion in damage, and could rival the worst East Coast storm on record.

Officials did not mince words, telling people to be prepared for several days without electricity. Jersey Shore beach towns began issuing voluntary evacuations and protecting boardwalks. Atlantic City casinos made contingency plans to close, and officials advised residents of flood-prone areas to stay with family or be ready to leave. Airlines said to expect cancellations and waived change fees for passengers who want to reschedule.

"Be forewarned," said Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy. "Assume that you will be in the midst of flooding conditions, the likes of which you may not have seen at any of the major storms that have occurred over the last 30 years."

Many storm-seasoned residents had not begun to panic. Along North Carolina's fragile Outer Banks, no evacuations had been ordered and ferries hadn't yet been closed. Plenty of stores remained open and houses still featured Halloween decorations outside, as rain started to roll in.

"I'll never evacuate again," said Lori Hilby, manager of a natural foods market in Duck, N.C., who left her home before Hurricane Irene struck last August. "... Whenever I evacuate, I always end up somewhere and they lose power and my house is fine. So I'm always wishing I was home."

Farther north, residents were making more cautious preparations. Patrick and Heather Peters pulled into their driveway in Bloomsburg, Pa., with a kerosene heater, 12 gallons of water, paper plates, batteries, flashlights and the last lantern on Wal-Mart's shelf. They've also rented a U-Haul in case the forecast gets worse over the weekend.

"I'm not screwing around this time," said Heather Peters, whose town was devastated last year by flooding following Hurricane Irene.

Across the street, Douglas Jumper, whose first floor took on nearly 5 feet of water during Irene, was tying down his patio furniture on Friday and moving items in his wood shop to higher ground.

"I'm tired. I am tired," Jumper, who turns 58 on Saturday, said through tears. "We don't need this again."

At a Home Depot in Freeport, on Long Island in New York, Bob Notheis bought sawhorses to put his furniture on inside his home.

"I'm just worried about how bad it's going to be with the tidal surge," he said. "Irene was kind of rough on me and I'm just trying to prepare."

The storm threatened to hit two weeks before Election Day, while several states were heavily involved in campaigning, canvassing and get-out-the-vote efforts. Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney and Vice President Joe Biden both canceled weekend campaign events in coastal Virginia Beach, Va., though their events in other parts of the states were going on as planned. In Rhode Island, politicians asked supporters to take down yard signs for fear they might turn into projectiles in the storm.

After Irene left millions without power, utilities were taking no chances and were lining up extra crews and tree-trimmers. Wind threatened to topple power lines, and trees that still have leaves could be weighed down by snow and fall over if the weight becomes too much.

In upstate New York, Richard Ball was plucking carrots, potatoes, beets and other crops from the ground as quickly as possible. Ball was still shaky from Irene, which scoured away soil, ruined crops and killed livestock last year.

Farmers were moving tractors and other equipment to high ground, and some families pondered moving furniture to upper stories in their homes.

"The fear we have a similar recipe to Irene has really intensified anxieties in town," Ball said Friday.

Sandy has killed at least 40 people in the Caribbean, and just left the Bahamas. Residents from Florida to North Carolina will experience peripheral impacts of the hurricane through the weekend.

As it turns back to the north and northwest and merges with colder air from a winter system, West Virginia and further west into eastern Ohio and southern Pennsylvania are expected to get snow. Forecasters were looking at the Delaware shore as the spot the storm will turn inland, bringing 10 inches of rain and extreme storm surges, said Louis Uccellini, environmental prediction director for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Up to 2 feet of snow should fall on West Virginia, with lighter snow in parts of Ohio and Pennsylvania. A wide swath of the East, measuring several hundreds of miles, will get persistent gale-force 50 mph winds, with some areas closer to storm landfall getting closer to 70 mph, said James Franklin, forecast chief for the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

"It's going to be a long-lasting event, two to three days of impact for a lot of people," Franklin said. "Wind damage, widespread power outages, heavy rainfall, inland flooding and somebody is going to get a significant surge event."

Nonetheless, some residents were still shrugging off the impending storm.

On North Carolina's Ocracoke Island, which suffered a direct hit from Irene, the grocery side of Tommy Hutcherson's Ocracoke Variety Store was bustling. But few people had been shopping on the hardware side.

"People go through this all the time around here. It's not the first time and it won't be the last," Hutcherson said.

Last year's Hurricane Irene was a minimal hurricane that caused widespread damage as it moved north along the coast after making landfall in North Carolina. With catastrophic inland flooding in New Jersey, Massachusetts and Vermont, federal officials say Irene caused $15.8 billion in damage.

Sandy is "looking like a very serious storm that could be historic," said Jeff Masters, meteorology director of the forecasting service Weather Underground. "Mother Nature is not saying, 'Trick or treat.' It's just going to give tricks."

Some have compared the tempest to the so-called Perfect Storm that struck off the coast of New England in 1991, but that one hit a less populated area.

Masters said this could be as big, perhaps bigger, than the worst East Coast storm on record, a 1938 New England hurricane that is sometimes known as the Long Island Express, which killed nearly 800 people.

If the storm hits farther north than forecast and comes in closer to Long Island ? which is still well within the National Hurricane Center's cone of uncertainty for where the storm can come ashore ? storm surge in the New York City area could be 3 to 6 feet, which might be enough to put water into the New York City subway system, Masters said. Last year Irene missed doing that by only eight inches, he said.

If the storm hits farther south, closer to Washington D.C., those areas could be doused with extreme storm surge and rain.

"You're preparing for the worst and praying for the best, and whatever God can do to keep it from whacking, we'd appreciate it," said Kevin Boyle, administrator of the borough of Pompton Lakes, N.J.

"Rogue trader" weeps as tells court he acted for good of UBS

LONDON (Reuters) - Former UBS trader Kweku Adoboli wept on Friday as he told a jury that his "off-book" trading was done for the benefit of the bank that meant everything to him.

Addressing the court for the first time in his long-running trial in London, Adoboli said he had no reason to believe he was doing anything wrong since he was doing it to generate profits and colleagues knew about it.

"UBS was my family and every single thing I did, every single bit of effort I put into that organisation, was for the benefit of the bank," said Adoboli, his voice breaking as he wept and thumped the witness box with his hand.

"That is everything I lived for ... To find yourself in Wandsworth Prison for nine months because all you did was worked so hard for this bank," he said through tears.

The 32-year-old British-educated Ghanaian was arrested on September 15, 2011, and blamed for losses of $2.3 billion. He was in custody until he was granted bail in June 2012.

He has pleaded not guilty to two counts of fraud and four of false accounting, covering the period between October 2008 and September 2011.

The prosecution says Adoboli traded far in excess of his authorised risk limits, concealed his unhedged positions by booking fictitious hedges, and lied to the back office when asked questions about his accounts.

Adoboli said he had developed an accounting mechanism he called his "umbrella" which allowed him to keep certain trades and the profits they generated "off-book".

He said this "profit pool" served two purposes: to help offset mounting costs that were a drain on the desk's profits, and to give him and his desk colleagues confidence to trade in the knowledge that they had a "cash buffer" to fall back on should they make losses.

Adoboli said he did not think this was dishonest or contrary to the bank's rules because it was aimed at making a profit, which was the purpose of his job.

"Ultimately that's what everyone cares about," he said.

"KEEP ON DOING IT"

He also said that when he explained his umbrella to his three fellow traders on the Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) desk and to colleagues from other trading desks, nobody gave any sign that they disapproved.

"The response I got from everyone else is 'OK, that's a way of doing it, that's an accounting practice, keep on doing it'," he told the court.

Asked about a comment from fellow trader John Hughes that "your umbrella is going to get us fired", Adoboli said this was a joke.

Adoboli described the ETFs desk as over-stretched and under-resourced. He referred to himself and Hughes, the only two traders on the desk initially, as "babies" and "kids" dealing with a "massive" $50 billion book.

The courtroom was packed as Adoboli gave his evidence, wearing a dark suit and dark red tie. Most of the time he appeared confident, speaking loudly and clearly as he answered questions from his lawyer.

But Adoboli cried on several occasions when friends and family were mentioned. The first was when his lawyer mentioned that his father had come from Ghana and been present in the courtroom throughout the trial, which started on September 10.

Describing how hard he had worked during the financial crisis in 2008, when he said he had feared for the survival of UBS, Adoboli wept again as he recalled that he had missed his grandmother's funeral because of how committed he was to his job.

The most dramatic moment in the first day of his evidence came just before the court adjourned for lunch, when Adoboli broke down as he tried to explain what his work had meant to him.

"It's hard to find the words to describe the relationship I had with UBS," he said, launching into a passionate speech during which he sobbed, struggled to catch his breath and thumped the desk in front of him with his right hand.

After a summer internship at UBS in 2002, when he was a student, Adoboli joined the bank as a graduate trainee in 2003. Throughout his evidence on Friday, he spoke of pride and a sense of belonging and of the respect and friendship he felt for many of his colleagues.

The trial continues on Monday, when Adoboli will continue giving evidence.

Skinny Minnie: Disney fave gets Barneys makeover

NEW YORK (AP) ? Did Minnie Mouse do a catwalk cleanse?

For a brief moment in Barneys New York's upcoming holiday window display, Minnie becomes a long, lean high-fashion model ? and the skinny Minnie is drawing some criticism.

The Barneys display puts Disney characters on the runway in front of animated versions of industry bigwigs in a short film that features Minnie's daydream sequence strutting her stuff in Paris in a hot-pink, ruffle-covered Lanvin dress.

Runway Minnie gets only a few seconds of face time, but when she does, she transforms into a model who is tall and thin with longer legs, leaner arms and daintier gloved hands than the polkadot-loving character who typically embraces her curves from head to toe. Daisy Duck, Cruella De Vil and Goofy get similar insta-slim treatments.

For most of the film, however, Minnie and crew look their usual selves. Minnie has her big bows, round face and signature wide-width pumps.

"Viewers will recognize the Minnie they know and love, as she takes a turn on the runways of Paris and in her own mirror, wearing a custom creation from one of the world's greatest designers," Barneys said in a statement to The Associated Press. "Some of the early highly stylized fashion illustrations have garnered significant attention, however the reality is Disney's Minnie Mouse proves that true fashion lovers come in all styles and sizes."

Still, the makeover has prompted several online petitions targeting Barneys and Disney for perpetuating the skinny-model image that the fashion industry has been criticized for many times over.

One of the louder voices is Taren Stinebrickner-Kauffman, executive director and founder of SumofUs.org, a consumer watchdog group. In just over a week, the SumofUs.org petition has attracted close to 80,000 online "signatures." There are a half-dozen additional petitions up on Change.org, including one with more than 135,000 supporters. It was launched by Ragen Chastain, who self-published the book "Fat: The Owners Manual ? Navigating a Thin-Obsessed World with Your Health, Happiness and a Sense of Humor Intact."

Stinebrickner-Kauffman said she took this issue on after a friend of hers ? a mother to a grade-school daughter ? posted about it on Facebook. "Girls have seen Minnie Mouse as a healthy character in their lives ... to have her image subverted like that is troubling."

Girls are "bombarded" by impossible physical figures in the media, says Stinebrickner-Kauffmann, and to have such a familiar face ? and shape ? be turned into such a skinny Minnie seems like it could fuel the insecurities young women often have about themselves and their bodies.

Models are indeed taller and thinner than most women, and those features are further exaggerated in fashion illustrations used by designers ? and by Barneys in its promotional material for the Nov. 14 launch of its displays, says Steven Stipelman, assistant chair of fashion design at the Fashion Institute of Technology.

Those are the images that are being protested, as the film short has not been released beyond the trailer provided to The Associated Press. The film does not feature the drawing that has been the focus of criticism, though Minnie does undergo a transformation as soon as she steps onto the catwalk in front of Lanvin designer Alber Elbaz, International Herald Tribune reporter Suzy Menkes and Harper's Bazaar global fashion director Carine Roitfeld, among other recognizable faces. Runway Minnie even masters the straight-ahead stare and bouncy strut that real-life models aim to master.

She then comes quickly back to reality and her everyday appearance, and the film ends with her just as happy as herself window-shopping on Madison Avenue as she was in Paris.

"Fashion drawing is a fantasy," said Stipelman, who teaches illustration. "They are conveying a mood, a feeling and attitude. It's supposed to make you feel like you want the attitude of this person, not like you're going on a diet so you can look like this person."

He adds, "It looks exaggerated because you know what you're comparing it to. If you didn't know what Minnie looked like, you probably wouldn't even notice."

Loose tweets sink ships: Secret Service sets up hotline for - RT

Image from US Secret Service Twitter feed

With less than two weeks to go before the US presidential election, the Secret Service is ramping up its intelligence-gathering efforts and asking Twitter users to report threatening tweets against politicians to a local field office.

Debates over the November 6 election are already raging on social media: Users exchanged around 6.5 million tweets during the third presidential debate on Monday, and a few of the messages contained death threats against President Obama and GOP nominee Mitt Romney.

Another 21 million tweets were made during the previous vice presidential and two presidential debates.

The US Secret Service, which is tasked with protecting the president and top government officials, recently issued a statement on their Twitter account asking users to report threatening tweets: ?To report a tweet that concerns you, call the nearest field office in your state.?

The Secret Service opened their twitter account over a year ago. The organization maintains no other social media accounts, which hints at Twitter?s importance and usefulness in intelligence-gathering.

Politics, hate and death threats

The recent presidential debates ignited heated arguments on Twitter from supporters of both presidential candidates, with some making death threats against Obama and Romney:

"Don't worry guys if Romney is elected as President I'll take the fall for you all and assassinate him", tweeted @kay_dizzle94.

"I would love to shoot romney with a shotgun [sic]," tweeted @jasg30.

"I have a 1 step plan: Kill Romney," declared @KeshiaCheesman.

"Someone needs to assassinate Obama ? like ASAP", tweeted Alyssa Douglas.

?Ima hit president Obama with that Lee Harvey Oswald swag,? wrote Donte Jamar Sims.

Some of these threats are currently being investigated by the Secret Service.

Although Twitter cannot disclose users? locations, the agency has ?the means at [its] disposal? to locate Twitter users, Secret Service spokesperson Ed Donovan told the Los Angeles Times. The organization could, for example, issue a court-approved subpoena to an Internet service provider.

Sims, 21, from North Carolina was arrested in September and is accused of threatening to kill President Barack Obama in a series of Twitter messages, including one reading, "the Secret Service is gonna be defenseless once I aim the Assault Rifle at Barack's Forehead." He is currently in police custody.

And 25-year-old Jarvis Britton of Alabama was also arrested last month and charged with death threats against the president after an anonymous caller reported a tweet that said, ?free speech? Really? Let?s test this! Let?s kill the president!?

Secret Service took action and interviewed Britton after they noticed other tweets on his feed referring to cyanide poisoning. Britton later sent out another tweet that read, ?Let?s kill the president. F.E.A.R.? He was arrested shortly afterward.

He pleaded not guilty on October 16, but threats against the president are considered a felony in US, punishable by a fine and up to five years in prison. His fate remains unclear.

Intelligence agencies? interest in social media is not a new phenomenon. The FBI and local police have for years regularly monitored and collected information on US citizens on Facebook and Twitter.

The FBI is reportedly attempting to create a system that would automatically monitor social media users. The bureau is attempting to build a network where ?suspicious? posts would be flagged and instantly reveal the user?s location to authorities.

CDG Commerce Goes Team Building Trip Via Canoes | Ping! Zine

(Ping! Zine Web Tech Magazine) ? Companies routinely do team building exercises, whether it?s to strengthen trust between co-workers or to simply become more efficient. Account merchant provider CDG Commerce had an entirely unique take on team building thing, recently setting out on the Nishnabotna River with a fleet of 63 canoes.

And apparently the company is a fan of multitasking, because along for the ride were CDG?s live chat representatives who had to balance fun with work, all while canoeing. Challenging right?

CDG Commerce special events coordinator Marius Dicpetris recently explained the company?s reasoning behind the measure. ?It just seemed a shame not to allow all of our hard-working live chat representatives to join in the fun. So we brought them along. And we let them know, look, your safety comes first, so if your boat capsizes, DO NOT attempt to swim and type responses simultaneously,? she commented in a report from TheHostingNews.com.

Interestingly enough, during one live chat session, CDG representative Chad Knauer experienced a snake. But that wasn?t the worst thing, the company also had a man overboard.

While CDG may be setting a record with canoeing all while operating a business, if it continues to do so, it could find itself up the creek without a paddle, so to speak. Check out the inside scoop on The Hosting News.
