Where does your stress come from?? Does your stress come from one source or multiple sources?
Aurora Health Care polled their employees on stress.? The first question was ?On a scale from 1 to 6 (most stressed), how stressed have you felt in the past month?.? Of the 2051 responses, 36 % answered 6 on the scale and 20% answered 5, with 18% answering 4.? The next question asked ?Where does most of your stress come from??? Most of the 4,077 responded with work, but 24% responded with money/finances.? That?s 978 employed people that are feeling stressed over their money/finances.
There are some interesting studies that have been done in regards to employee productivity when finances are a stress factor.
According to the American Institute of Stress, 60 to 80 percent of accidents on the job are stress related distractions or from sleepiness.? An estimated one million workers miss work each day because of stress.? In a poll done by the National Foundation for Credit Counseling, employees lost 5.2 hours of work a week being distracted by financial problems.
If stress isn?t bad enough, some people are turning to alcohol, drugs, gambling or shopping to try and relieve their stress.? These activities generally make their financial situation worse.? So what are the answers?? If you find that you are feeling stressed more than is comfortable, than take a look at your work/life balance.? Does your employer have a wellness program?? If so, find out what it is all about and what might be available to help you deal with your stress and bring your life in balance.
Does your employer have an employee assistance program (EAP)?? This may also be a place to get some help with stress from an EAP coach or counselor.? If money is a problem, than seek out a non-profit credit counseling agency that can review your financial situation with you and help you establish goals and assist you with debt repayment.? Not all credit counseling agencies are equal so do some work and find out if they are licensed to do business in your state, how much do they charge, are their counselors certified, do they belong to an organization like the National Foundation for Credit Counseling, are they accredited through the Council on Accreditation, do they have a physical presence in your community and are they a member of the Better Business Bureau?? Don?t be pressured into doing anything you are not comfortable with.? A reputable agency isn?t going to be gone tomorrow, so don?t be afraid to say you want to think about it for a few days.
You don?t have to suffer from stress if you are lucky enough to have an employer who is working with their employees to lead healthier lives.? There is also professional counseling, exercises geared to relieving stress and medication if necessary.? Please don?t suffer alone; the first step is reaching out for help.
