VIRGINIA WATER, England, May 26 (Reuters) - Title holder Luke Donald prompted cries of 'Luke, Luke' after cajoling a 15-foot birdie putt into the cup at the 18th to open a two-stroke lead after the PGA Championship third round on Saturday.

The world number two, who needs to finish eighth on his own to take over from Rory McIlroy at the top of the rankings, was at his scrambling best to return a three-under-par 69 for an 11-under 205 total as gusts up to 40-kph swirled around Wentworth.

"That was by far my best round of the week," Donald told reporters. "The course is not geared towards a bombing long-hitter, it's geared towards someone who can work the ball around.

"I went for a run at nine o'clock this morning and it was blowing then so I knew it was going to be tough today."

Fellow Briton Justin Rose claimed second spot on 207 after another 69, two ahead of Irishman Peter Lawrie (72).

Course designer Ernie Els was on the fringes of contention in joint fourth on 211 alongside fellow South Africans Branden Grace and Richard Sterne and 1999 British Open champion Paul Lawrie.

A scorching sun shone throughout the day at the European Tour's flagship event but only a handful of players managed to break par as the wind sent scores soaring.

Donald picked up three birdies in a flawless performance over the first 14 holes.

He dropped his first stroke of the day at the 15th and calamity beckoned two holes later when, using his bright white driver, he sent his tee shot wildly right into the trees.

Donald's rescue attempt merely succeeded in pushing the ball a few yards forward before a low third sent it scurrying under the branches.

SHORT GAME

The Englishman, though, has a masterful short game and he proved it once again by wedging the ball up to six feet and holing out for a five.

"Making my birdie putt at the 18th was hugely important for me," said Donald. "I hit a couple of loose shots coming down the stretch but I was very pleased the way I finished."

Rose said he was relishing the potential of a final-round confrontation with Donald.

"The crowds have been so supportive of all the players this week but especially the English lads," added the world number 10.

"It's great to play in front of them here at home and playing with Luke tomorrow is going to be a lot of fun."

Fun was not the word Els had in mind after plotting his way to a two-under 70.

The South African, who has a property on the estate and has masterminded a complete overhaul of the famous West Course in recent years, was in a foul mood after failing to get his long approach to stay on the putting surface at the par-five 18th.

In a tirade sprinkled with expletives, Els accused tour officials and greenkeeping staff of failing to sufficiently water the greens.

"I landed my second at the 18th probably five yards too far," said the former world number one. "How much money did we spend on the 18th? We built a dam there. Why the hell was the green not holding?

"My point is, you hit a driver and then a four-iron gets you in the middle of the green. What else must you do next? Must I be the greenkeeper here?

"I'm a player, I'm not even supposed to tell them. Put water on a damn golf course? Surely they should know that? I can't control the wind and (it seems) I can't control the greens staff either."

Tournament director David Garland denied the putting surfaces had not been watered enough.

"The greens have been hand watered every night after play," said Garland. "Because of the conditions some fairways were also watered and tees were moved forward on the 13th, 15th, 17th and 18th as they were playing into the strong east wind."

The conditions proved too much for James Morrison who began the day with a four-stroke lead. The little-known Briton made two eights on the front nine as he ballooned to an 81 for 213, three under.

Morrison retained his sense of humour, though, raising his hands in mock celebration and smiling broadly after rolling in a curling six-foot putt at the 15th for his only birdie. (Editing by Ed Osmond)

Childhood Cancer Survivors at Risk for Long-Term Emotional Distress

Survivors of childhood cancer are at greater risk for persistent hair loss and disfigurement, and for some individuals that may lead to long-term emotional distress, according to a new study.

Compared to their siblings, cancer survivors have more scarring and disfigurement on their arms, legs and head later in life. And, on average, adults with these traits tend to have more depression and a lower quality of life.

?I think it showed us these aren?t necessarily life-threatening late effects of cancer? but certainly we need to be more aware of the outcomes these patients are dealing with,? said Karen Kinahan, coordinator of the STAR Survivorship Program at the Robert H. Lurie Cancer Center of Northwestern University in Chicago.

Kinahan and her team analyzed information on 14,358 childhood cancer survivors and 4,023 of their siblings already participating in a different study.

Survivors of leukemia, lymphoma and kidney cancers who had been diagnosed before they were 21 years old (and had started treatment between 1970 and 1987) answered a questionnaire when they entered the study and another in 2003.

Overall, one-fourth of the survivors had a scar or disfigurement on their head or neck, compared to one in 12 of their siblings. Cancer survivors were also more likely to have scars or disfigurements on their arms, legs, chests and stomachs.

Scars and disfigurements can be caused by surgery or radiation. And in children who are still growing, areas that are radiated tend not to grow as well, according to Dr. Karen Wasilewski-Masker, a pediatric oncologist at Children?s Healthcare of Atlanta. This may result in cancer survivors looking out of proportion as they age.

Individuals with scars or disfigurements on their head, neck, arms or legs had a 20 percent higher risk of depression than those without scars, according to the researchers.

Cancer survivors also experienced more hair loss than their siblings?about 14 percent of survivors and six percent of cancer-free siblings reported going bald. And balding was also linked to depression, especially in women.

The researchers found that various aspects of cancer survivors? quality of life were worse and were linked to scarring, disfigurements and hair loss. These included general health, physical ability, pain, mental health and social functioning.

?We need to be aware of the possibility of some psychosocial problems in patients that have some type of disfigurement? but we also need to not assume that just because a person may look different because of a cancer treatment that it?s impacting them in a negative way,? said Wasilewski-Masker, who is part of Children?s Healthcare of Atlanta?s program for childhood cancer survivors.

In a separate study, published in the same journal, researchers found that nearly three-fourths of 388 people between 15 and 39 years old were back at work or school full-time within 15 to 35 months of being diagnosed with cancer. ?More than half, however, experienced trouble when they returned, including forgetting things and struggling to keep up with the work.

?Really this study is a starting point to understand the groups in this population who are least likely to return to work. It really sets the stage for future studies,? said Helen Parsons, the study?s lead author from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.

Wasilewski-Masker added that there are differences between cancer patients when making the determination of whether to stop working or going to school. For example, high school and college students are typically still financially supported by their parents, and patients? abilities may depend on the intensity of their treatment.

The report is published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

A man was arrested for assaulting a teenager and stealing his bicycle in Watsonville Friday, police said.? The 16-year-old boy was riding in the area of Union Street and East Front Street at around 6:30 p.m. when a man approached him and demanded his bicycle, police said. When the victim refused, the man struck him on the head with a blunt object, knocking him to the ground.

The suspect took the bicycle and rode away.? The victim called police, who followed up on the information he provided and found a suspect at a residence on Lincoln Street. The victim identified that person as the man who took his bicycle, and officers found the bicycle and returned it to the victim.

The suspect, identified as Israel Rivas Garibay, 29, of Watsonville, was arrested for robbery and a probation violation. Anyone with information about the case has been asked to call Watsonville police at (831) 768-3350.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? A San Francisco supervisor who said he consulted a Ouija board before a vote now says he was joking ? and the only spirit he was summoning was the spirit of humor.

Supervisors on Tuesday approved a non-binding resolution urging the Navy to name a ship after slain supervisor and gay rights activist Harvey Milk.

Supervisor John Avalos told the San Francisco Chronicle (http://bit.ly/MIq4dT ) that before voting, he believes he made contact with Milk's spirit and that Milk spelled out letters indicating: "Good riddance to don't ask, don't tell."

The quip made national news as an example of San Francisco wackiness.

Avalos now says he was just kidding and the closest he's gotten to the occult is reading all the "Harry Potter" books.

Tokyo, Madrid, Istanbul make cut for 2020 Olympics

Tokyo, Istanbul and Madrid made the first cut among bidders to host the 2020 Olympics, as the International Olympic Committee announced that Baku and Doha were dropped from the running.

The IOC will decide which city will host the 2020 Olympics in a final vote on September 7, 2013 in Buenos Aires. That gives the remaining hopefuls more than 15 months to make final impressions upon the IOC to boost their candidacy.

Tokyo 2020 bid chief Tsunekazu Takeda said Wednesday that being on the short list would help boost the spirits of the Japanese people after last year's devastating earthquake and tsunami, which killed about 19,000 people.

"I think this will be a big help for the Japanese people," Takeda said. "I think it will give big, big power to the people who suffered the disaster."

Tokyo is the only one of the candidates to have hosted the event before, doing so in 1964, and many see Tokyo as the pacesetter because of its sound plan for hosting the games.

Hosting the 2020 Olympics is also seen as an opportunity to help rebuild the country and bring some much-needed joy after last year's natural disaster.

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Nodo said hosting the Games would "serve as a symbol of Japan's recovery from last year's tragedy."

"With the Japanese government's full support for Tokyo's bid, our nation greatly desires to achieve the goal of hosting the Games," he said.

As in 2008, Tokyo is considered the frontrunner with the best technical file, but is facing fewer rivals this round, with the total number of candidate cities down from five last time.

With the 2018 Winter Olympics being held in Pyeongchang, however, there may be a reluctance to hold back-to-back events in Asia.

Ordinarily Madrid would be seen as running close with Tokyo, having beaten them in the race for 2016 only to finish a runner-up to Rio de Janeiro. Madrid also offers some of the best conditions for athletes.

But the specter of Spain's dire financial crisis hangs over the bid.

The IOC decision was a landmark sign of progress for serial bidder Turkey, which was shortlisted after failing to win the right to host the 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2012 Games.

"This is a historic moment," said Istanbul bid team member Hasan Arat.

Istanbul's pitch has not fundamentally changed since last time, but the bid team ironed out deficiencies in the original proposals.

"This time, Istanbul is ready to deliver," Arat said in a statement.

Istanbul, however, is also bidding to host the 2020 UEFA European Football Championship, and the IOC forbids hosting two major sports events in the same year.

Many believe that Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a former footballer, favors hosting the UEFA competition over the Olympics, but Arat insisted: "Our priority is the Olympics."

"The chance to compete on the greatest stage in sport in front of a home crowd will inspire a generation of young people," added Hidayet Turkoglu, the national men's basketball captain, who plays for the NBA's Orlando Magic.

To further trim the field, IOC officials will look mainly at the cities' ability to host a major sporting event, ranking their transportation capabilities and examining other infrastructure challenges they may face.

The IOC Working Group said in a report that aspects of Istanbul's proposal must be improved for a better experience for athletes.

Baku had also failed to make the short list last time but had insisted it learned from past mistakes.

The IOC, however, noted a lack of infrastructure and experience in hosting a major sporting event, as well as concerns about the impact of new venue construction on the city's architectural heritage.

There was also sadness in Doha after it was cut.

"We are obviously very disappointed... (and) surprised by this decision," said Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, general secretary of the Qatar Olympic Committee.

Doha had been granted an exception to possibly host the Games in October and November, when temperatures in the Gulf country are not as blisteringly hot, instead of the usual July and August.

Had the bid been successful, it would have been the first to bring the Games to the Middle East.

Doha scored among the top candidates for technical ability to host the Games, and having already built or budgeted many of the venues, its bid would have offered a degree of certainty in uncertain economic times.

But the furor after Qatar was awarded the 2022 World Cup, according to some, made IOC members reluctant to suffer the same bad press as FIFA did.

Many types of skin tumors, both benign (noncancerous) and malignant (cancerous), exist. Approximately 20-40% of primary skin tumors are
malignant in dogs and 50-65% are malignant in cats.

Not all forms of skin cancer in cats and dogs are caused by sun exposure, but it can happen occasionally. On dogs, the nose and pads of the feet contain sensitive skin and no fur to protect from the sun.
Also, cats and dogs with thin or light-colored coats are at a higher risk of sun damage over their entire bodies.

Malignant Melanoma???????????????????????????? Dog breeds

Malignant melanoma affects pigmented cells called melanocytes. Cats and dogs often develop benign tumors in these cells, which do not metastasize. These tumors are found on areas of the body that has hair. Most malignant melanomas occur on the mouth or mucous membranes, but they are occasionally found on parts of the body covered with hair. They tend to grow extremely fast and are likely to spread to other organs, including the lungs and liver. The cause of melanomas remains unknown, although genetic factors seem to play a role. Additionally, trauma or compulsive licking of a particular spot on the skin may increase the likelihood that cells will multiply, thereby raising the chances that cells will mutate during the division process and become cancerous.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma

This form of skin cancer is often caused by exposure to the sun. Firm and often raised tumors usually occur in the abdomen or genitals, but can also occur on the feet, which can be painful and cause limping. Scientists believe there may also be a connection between the papilloma virus and the development of squamous cell tumors in certain dogs. The feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) has also been linked to the development of squamous cell carcinoma in cats, although it is unclear what role the virus plays in the development of these tumors.

Mast Cell Tumors

These skin cancers, which occur in the mast cells of the immune system, are the most common skin tumors in canines. Mast cell tumors are the second most common skin tumor in the cat, accounting approximately for 20% of all skin tumors. Veterinarians don?t know what causes mast cell tumors to develop, although there have been cases where they have been linked to inflammation or irritants on the skin. Evidence suggests genetic factors are often important, and the hormones estrogen and progesterone may also affect cancer growth.

Basal Cell Tumors???????????????????????????????????? Cat breeds

This is the most common type of skin cancer in cats. It is more common in older cats, often appearing as a single growth on the head. Basal cell tumors occur as small nodular growths beneath the skin, often next to each other, producing solid sheets of bumps. They also tend to occur on the back and upper chest. Basal cell tumors enlarge locally and spread by direct extension. They do not usually metastasize. Basal cell tumors are most commonly seen in Siamese and domestic longhaired cats. Rarely, basal cell tumors become malignant. This occurs primarily in Persian cats.

Signs and symptoms

Skin tumors are usually discovered by pet owners as abnormal growths on the skin while examining or grooming their pets. Most benign tumors are slow growing and painless, with well defined boundaries and freely movable. In contrast, malignant tumors tend to be rapidly growing and often ulcerated with ill-defined boundaries.
Cats and dogs sometimes experience itchiness because of the cancer, which might cause them to scratch or chew at the affected area. This will often lead to redness of the skin or a flaky appearance.

Diagnosis

Typically, either cytologic or histopathologic analysis of the suspected mass is done prior to initiating treatment. The commonly used diagnostic procedures for skin tumors are fine-needle aspiration cytology and tissue biopsy.
Cytology is an important tool that can help the veterinarian distinguish a tumor from inflammatory lesions. The biopsy technique used will largely depend on the tumor's size and location. Small masses are usually completely excised and sent to the pathology lab to confirm that the surrounding healthy tissues that were excised along with the tumor do not contain any cancer cells. If the tumor is larger, a small sample is removed for analysis and depending on the results, appropriate treatment is chosen. Depending on the tumor type and its level of aggressiveness, additional diagnostic tests can include blood tests to assess the pet?s overall health, chest X-rays to check for lung metastasis, and abdominal ultrasound to check for metastasis to other internal organs.

Treatment

The specific treatment will depend on the tumor's type, location, size, and whether the cancer has spread to other organs. Surgical removal of the tumor remains the standard treatment of choice, but additional forms of therapy such as radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or immunotherapy exist.
When detected early, skin cancer in cats and dogs can often be treated successfully. In many cases, a biopsy can remove the whole tumor, as long as the healthy tissues removed from just outside the tumor area do not contain any cancer cells.
