Home Improvement-Painting Tips for Concrete Floors | The DJI ...

Many garages or basement have concrete flooring. Concrete can be readily painted as compared to other high-end treatments. Painting your concrete flooring will not only make it prettier but also more durable and easier to clean. If painting is carried out correctly, your concrete floor can last for many years.

How to Begin:

This is not a very expensive home remodeling project but it is one that is more than an overnight project. First thing you have to do is to ensure that your floor is completely dry before starting on your painting project. Just in case you notice some wet spots, especially if it?s from the basement, it is recommended that you consult a professional to correct that seepage problem first.

Once you are completely certain that your floor is already dry, next step is to scrub it in order to free it from chemical residues and greases. This is important especially if the floor you wish to paint on is your garage or shop area. This is significant because the paint would not be able to adhere completely in the presence of any foreign material.

Some kitty litter would be very handy in absorbing most of that grease on the floor if any. Next, scrub the floor using Goof Off and then rinse thoroughly. Afterwards, scrub the floor with the use of some TSP mixture; rinse and repeat several times until the mop looks clean after rinsing. After about three days of drying, the floor is now primed for painting.

Some final preparations before you start painting:

Use a sander or some 80-grit paper to smoothen the floor, remove any bumpy protion or materials that are stuck on the floor?s surface. A tack clothe would also be helpful in removing some residue from the sanding that the vacuum could miss.

Take time also to repair any visible cracks. Use Cement Fixall to plug these cracks or little holes and be sure to let it dry thoroughly.

Finally it is time to paint!

First, you will need two applications of stain blocker and a primer like Kilz. Take note that before applying the second coating the surface must be thoroughly dried after the first coating. Now you can apply a top quality latex flat paint. A paint compressor or roller may be necessary for a fine painting job.

Decorating your painted floor:

At this juncture, if you wish you may add some designs like geometric shapes or faux stone to make the floor look even more beautiful. You may run wild with your creativity at this point, just make sure to let the floor dry completely before finishing.

Best finish for your painted concrete flooring:

Using a quarter-inch nap roller, finish your painted concrete floor with two applications of Breakthrough sealer. Take precautions by wearing a respirator mask as fumes are expected when doing this. Allow the floor to thoroughly dry for one final time.

Now you have already finished your new floor. You may want to use an area rug or some throw rugs as it is still concrete. The difference is that it is now a beautiful concrete!
