(HealthDay News) -- Many people say they would avoid real-life contact with someone who unfriended them on Facebook, a new study finds.

"People think social networks are just for fun, but ... what you do on those sites can have real-world consequences," study author Christopher Sibona said in a news release from the University of Colorado, Denver.

Sibona, a doctoral student in the university's Computer Science and Information Systems program, looked at almost 600 survey responses gathered via Twitter and found that 40 percent of respondents said they would avoid in real life anyone who unfriended them on Facebook. Half said they would not avoid the person and 10 percent were unsure.

Women were more likely than men to avoid people who unfriended them, according to the study, which was released earlier this month at the Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences.

Six factors predicted whether someone would avoid a person who unfriended them:

If the person who did the unfriending discussed the event later.

If the unfriended person had an extremely negative emotional response.

If the unfriended person believed the action was because of their offline behavior.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? In a major step toward opening U.S. skies to thousands of unmanned drones, federal officials Thursday solicited proposals to create six drone test sites around the country.

The Federal Aviation Administration also posted online a draft plan for protecting people's privacy from the eyes in the sky. The plan would require each test site to follow federal and state laws and make a privacy policy publicly available.

Privacy advocates worry that a proliferation of drones will lead to a "surveillance society" in which the movements of Americans are routinely monitored, tracked, recorded and scrutinized by the authorities.

The military has come to rely heavily on drones overseas. Now there is tremendous demand to use drones in the U.S. for all kinds of tasks that are too dirty, dull or dangerous for manned aircraft. Drones, which range from the size of a hummingbird to the high-flying Globalhawks that weigh about 15,000 pounds without fuel, also are often cheaper than manned aircraft. The biggest market is expected to be state and local police departments.

The FAA is required by a law enacted a year ago to develop sites where civilian and military drones can be tested in preparation for integration into U.S. airspace that's currently limited to manned aircraft.

The law also requires that the FAA allow drones wide access to U.S. airspace by 2015, but the agency is behind schedule, and it's doubtful it will meet the deadline, the Transportation Department's inspector general said in a report last year.

The test sites are planned to evaluate what requirements are needed to ensure the drones don't collide with planes or endanger people or property on the ground. Remotely controlled drones don't have a pilot who can see other aircraft the way an onboard plane or helicopter pilot can.

There's also concern that links between drones and their on-the-ground operators can be broken or hacked, causing the operator to lose control of the drone. Military drones use encrypted GPS signals for navigation, which protects them from hacking, but the GPS signals used by civilian drones don't have that protection.

"Our focus is on maintaining and improving the safety and efficiency of the world's largest aviation system," Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said in a statement. "This research will give us valuable information about how best to ensure the safe introduction of this advanced technology into our nation's skies."

The test sites are also expected to boost the local economy of the communities where they are located. About two dozen government-industry partnerships have been formed over the past year to compete for the sites.

"Today's announcement by the FAA is an important milestone on the path toward unlocking the potential of unmanned aircraft and creating thousands of American jobs," said Michael Toscano, president and CEO of the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International.

"States across the country have been eager to receive this FAA designation because they recognize the incredible economic and job creation potential it would bring with it," he said in a statement.

Industry experts predict the takeoff of a multibillion-dollar market for civilian drones as soon as the FAA completes regulations to make sure they don't pose a safety hazard to other aircraft. Potential civilian users are as varied as the drones themselves. Power companies want them to monitor transmission lines. Farmers want to fly them over fields to detect which crops need water. Ranchers want them to count cows. Film companies want to use drones to help make movies. Journalists are exploring drones' newsgathering potential.

The FAA plans to begin integrating drones starting with small aircraft weighing less than about 55 pounds. The agency forecasts an estimated 10,000 civilian drones will be in use in the U.S. within five years.

The Defense Department says the demand for drones and their expanding missions requires routine and unfettered access to domestic airspace, including around airports and cities, for military testing and training. Currently, the military tests drones in specially designated swaths of airspace in mostly remote parts of the country where they are likely to encounter relatively few other aircraft.

The Customs and Border Patrol uses drones along the U.S.-Mexico border. And the FAA has granted several hundred permits to universities, police departments and other government agencies to use small, low-flying drones. For example, the sheriff's department in Montgomery County, Texas, has a 50-pound ShadowHawk helicopter drone intended to supplement its SWAT team.

The sheriff's department hasn't armed its drone, although the ShadowHawk can be equipped with a 40 mm grenade launcher and a 12-guage shotgun. The prospect of armed drones patrolling U.S. skies has alarmed some lawmakers and their constituents. More than a dozen bills have been introduced in Congress and state legislatures to curb drone use and protect privacy.

President Barack Obama was asked Thursday about concerns that the administration believes it's legal to strike American citizens abroad with drones and whether that's allowed against citizens in the U.S. If not, how would he create a legal framework to help citizens know drone strikes can't be used against them?

"There's never been a drone used on an American citizen on American soil," the president said, speaking during an online chat sponsored by Google in which he was promoting his policy initiatives.

"We respect and have a whole bunch of safeguards in terms of how we conduct counterterrorism operations outside of the United States. The rules outside of the United States are going to be different than the rules inside the United States, in part because our capacity, for example, to capture terrorists in the United States are very different than in the foothills or mountains of Afghanistan or Pakistan."

He said he would work with Congress to make sure the American public understands "what the constraints are, what the legal parameters are, and that's something that I take very seriously."

Earlier this week, an FAA official told a meeting of potential test site bidders that aviation regulations prohibit dropping anything from aircraft, which could be interpreted to bar arming civilian drones, according to an industry official present at the meeting who requested anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak publicly.

?The worst part is the bathrooms,? passenger Donna Gutzman told NBC News. ?There?s no water. You can?t really flush so everyone?s going in little plastic baggies and putting it outside their rooms.?

Fewer than two dozen public toilets are working, Carnival said.

The ship is being towed to port in Mobile, Ala., and is expected to arrive some time Thursday. A third tugboat was dispatched from Louisiana Wednesday to help the towing efforts.

Lani Corbett?s daughter, Shannon Dobbs, is on the Triumph with a group of co-workers. ?She sounded scared, angry, exhausted, miserable,? Corbett said, who last spoke to her daughter on Monday afternoon.? She was OK, but it was basically pandemonium.?

Corbett set up a Facebook page where friends and family members of cruise passengers had a place to get and share information. ?People are thankful I set it up,? she told NBC News. ?While we know everyone is safe, we still have the right to be scared for them.? By Wednesday, the page had more than 400 ?likes.?

Lindsey Peterson, whose parents are onboard the Triumph, said she?s hearing conflicting reports. ?Carnival is telling me that all the passengers are safe, the boat has 40 percent power, they have one dining room working with hot food and hot coffee, that the sleeping conditions are fine,? Peterson said. ?Everything that Carnival has told me thus far has not matched up with what my mom has said.?

Tess Hester, whose daughter is on the ship, received this message: ?This is honestly the worst experience ever. I?m not sure I can take two more days at sea with no food, water or power.?

Health concerns
One of the biggest concerns crew members will have until the ship docks is the potential for disease outbreak, particularly norovirus, which causes vomiting and diarrhea, Jay Herring, a former senior officer for Carnival Cruise Lines, told The Associated Press.

"Housekeeping, others are probably working double shifts to keep the mess clean and wipe down and sanitize all the common areas," said Herring, who worked for Carnival from 2002 to 2004 and spent four months on the Triumph.

?I think it?s very important that I apologize to our guests and to their families that have been affected by this very difficult situation,? Carnival CEO Gerry Cahill said. The cruise line has reserved 1,500 hotel rooms for passengers in Mobile and New Orleans, and 20 chartered flights will transport passengers to Houston, Cahill said at a press conference on Tuesday.

The Coast Guard and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the cause of the engine-room fire. The fire broke out Sunday morning as the Triumph -- with 3,143 passengers and 1,086 crew members on board -- was sailing about 150 miles off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. The flames were put out without any injuries to passengers or crew.

The disabled ship was originally going to be towed to the Mexican port of Progreso, but strong winds pushed them 90 miles north. Carnival decided to tow the ship to Mobile instead, making it easier for passengers traveling with passports to get home.

The ship left Galveston, Texas, on Thursday, and was scheduled to return on Monday.

The ship?s next 14 voyages, the earliest of which were scheduled to depart Monday and Saturday, have been canceled through April 13. Passengers scheduled to sail on those voyages will receive a full refund and a discount on a future cruise.

The incident comes more than two years after another Carnival ship, the Splendor, was crippled at sea by a fire in the engine room.

Students will spend their time camping, snorkeling and exploring through Florida?s natural springs, rivers and ocean shores.

?This year?s trip is focused on the natural springs of Florida,? said Brett Hagerty, program coordinator at the Outdoor Rec Center. ?We will visit three or four springs where students can swim and snorkel. An overnight canoe trip on the Suwannee River will punctuate the canoeing experience.?

The Outdoor Recreation trips program is focused on allowing students the opportunity to explore new places, gain skills, meet new people and have fun. Skills and safety instruction are an integral part of every trip so that risks can be decreased and participants can participate actively in the trip and can go on their own trips in the future. Trips are offered to give WVU students, faculty, staff and their families a chance to gain experience in a variety of outdoor activities while exploring beautiful environments.

?We hope to host students who want to explore, learn new things and are interested in seeing the real Florida,? Hagerty said.

Participants will be traveling in 12 passenger vans with no more than 10 people per van. Destinations for this year?s trip include the Suwannee River, Manatee Springs State Park and Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge. No previous experience in an outdoor setting is required, but participants can expect to work on gaining proper skills for the activities.

The cost of the trip is $425 and includes camping fees, park entrance fees, transportation, trip gear, instructional fees and food.

• African American females have lower overall incidence rates than whites for all cancers combined (6% lower) and for many cancers, including the two most common: breast and lung.
• Cancer death rates remain 33% higher among African American men than white men, despite the larger declines among African American men in the most recent time period.
• The cancer death rate among African American women is 16% higher than that among white women, despite a 6% lower cancer incidence rate.
• The higher overall cancer death rates among African Americans compared to whites is due largely to higher death rates for cancers of the breast and colorectum in women and for cancers of the prostate, lung and bronchus, and colorectum in men.

• Incidence rates for colorectal cancer are 23% higher in African American men and 22% higher in African American women compared with white men and women, respectively, and death rates are 53% higher in African American men and 46% higher in African American women, reflecting differences in risk factors, screening, and treatment. In 2010, 56% of African Americans aged 50 and older were up to date on guideline-recommended colorectal screening compared with 62% of whites.
• Overweight and obesity are more common among African American women and girls than white women and girls, while there is less racial disparity among men and boys.
