bronx 12 news: Shopping and Product Reviews: Will Traditional ...

The popularity of online shopping has been seen by many as a threat to the existence of traditional shopping. Their argument is based on the recent widespread closure of established brands like Sears and Best Buy. But can we really say that traditional shopping is dying?

In 2011, even though the U.S economy was sluggish, shopping grew by 15% over the previous year. In addition, about 35% of Americans now have smartphones which enable them to purchase goods and services over the internet and this figure is expected to rise significantly in subsequent years. In actual fact, about half of smartphone users have used their phones for one purchase or the other. On Christmas day of 2011 alone, about 6.8 million iOs and Android smartphones were activated. Top internet retailer, Amazon, recorded a whooping net sale of $48.08 billion in 2011 which represents 40.6% increase over $32.20 billion recorded in 2010. This figure is expected to rise in 2012 and subsequent years. What then is the implication of all these to physical retailing?

Since many people now decide to shop over the internet due to the benefits derivable in doing so like convenience, easy access to market, price comparison, avoidance of crowd, better prices and so on, can we really say that that the traditional way of shopping is being threatened? In my own opinion, technology will enhance the traditional method and not kill it. The popularity of video cassette recorder (VCR) in the 80's was seen by many as a threat to movie theaters then, but today, the film industry has been strengthened by the new technology and the demand for films has increased.

Moreover, when the email became very popular, a lot people thought that the traditional postal service would die, but today, it is waxing stronger. The point I'm driving at here is that, if traditional shop owners can embrace new technology, shopping on the internet would not be a threat to them but a blessing.

If physical retailers can monitor shopping behavior through the use of Wi-Fi signals from smartphones, they would be able to compete favorably in a fast-changing world. They can use technology to measure loyalty, make better staffing decisions, improve store layouts, reduce wait times in checkout lines and so on. Online shopping has come to stay but it is not a threat to traditional shopping because many consumers still value some of its features like quality of customer service, the experience of trying and buying products, how products are displayed and so on.

5 Reasons You Should Write a Book

If you?re looking to establish yourself as an expert in your field, there are few strategies that work better than writing a book. They?re a big deal to most people, and we all read them to find out about topics we?re interested in.

But don?t expect that you?ll make it to the top of the New York Times Bestseller list simply because you?ve written a book. Most authors, especially in the fiercely competitive business book field, won?t make a living writing books. But that doesn?t mean you shouldn?t consider writing one.

write a book

As a matter of fact, here are 5 reasons why you should write one:

1. People Take You More Seriously

There?s something about having a book or two on your resume that makes people sit up and pay attention. Which is surprising to me, because it?s actually pretty easy to write one (granted, I write for a living, so it might be a tad easier for me).

If you?re a small business owner, having written that book might be the one thing that sways a potential customer to buy from you.

2. You Get to Share Your Knowledge

As a business owner, you know a ton about your industry. You?re likely sharing your expertise on Twitter, Facebook and your blog, so writing a book should be a natural extension of that. Getting it all out of your head and onto paper can help you help others.

3. You?ll Get More Customers

Again,?writing books makes people trust you and your brand. If you?re looking for a way to get introduced to more potential customers, a book is a great way to do it. Just make sure you?ve got a solid marketing plan in place so that people know about it.

4. You?ll Get More Speaking Opportunities

Conferences and trade shows love inviting authors to speak or participate in panels. Your book is your ticket to speaking gigs. You can pitch conference organizers on a topic that relates to your book, or participate in a discussion on a subject you know well.

5. It?s the Ultimate in Content Marketing

You know that blogging and social media are part of a content marketing strategy, but everyone can do that. Not everyone makes the effort to write a book. By being one of the select few, you can go further than you can with the lower levels of content marketing and also use social media to promote your book?and your expertise.

The bonus? You?ll have plenty of fodder for your blog and social channels.

You don?t even have to write the book yourself if you?re not a prolific writer. That?s where ghost writers come in. You get the credit and you get a book that is well-written.

The conversation continues, feel free to join us in the conversation about why you should write a book.

4 Thanksgiving Stocks for Your Table (and Portfolio) ? Investing Daily

According to the National Turkey Federation, U.S. turkey consumption has more than doubled since 1970; in 2011, the average American put away 16.1 pounds of the bird a year.

Obviously, holidays are a peak time, accounting for 31% of total consumption. But that?s down from 50% in 1970, which means more Americans are eating turkey outside the typical Christmas and Thanksgiving periods.

In 2009 (the last year for which stats are available), processors churned out $16 billion worth of turkey-related products. Last year, 248.5 million turkeys were produced in the U.S.

Here?s a look at four stocks with connections to the quintessential American Thanksgiving meal. Two control the nation?s leading turkey producers, while the others make stuffing and desserts, including pumpkin pie.

1. Seaboard Corporation (AMEX: SEB) owns 50% of Butterball, which processed 1.30 billion pounds of turkey last year. Butterball?s 675,000-square-foot plant in Mt. Olive, North Carolina, is also the world?s largest turkey processing facility.

Seaboard is actually an agricultural conglomerate whose main divisions focus on pork processing, ocean shipping and grain trading. It also operates a number of smaller businesses, including an alternative energy subsidiary that converts pork fat and vegetable oils into biodiesel fuel.

Seaboard has over 90 years of history and has never split its stock, so it isn?t cheap at $2,162 a share. Still, it is up 5.6% in the last six months. The shares also trade at a reasonable 10.9 times the company?s last 12 months of earnings.

2. In second spot is Hormel Foods (NYSE: HRL) which processed 1.29 billion pounds last year through its Jennie-O Turkey Store division. Its other businesses include Grocery Products (including Stagg chili and the SPAM brand), Refrigerated Foods (such as Hormel party trays and meats) and Specialty Foods (which makes private-label products).

Minnesota-based Hormel reported its latest results on Tuesday. In the quarter ended October 28, the company saw sales gains at three of these divisions, with the exception being Refrigerated Foods, which posted a 2.6% decline from a year ago. Turkey products sales were a highlight, with a 5.0% gain, though Grocery Products was the standout, with a 20.6% gain thanks to strong sales of SPAM products and Hormel chili.

As a result, Hormel?s overall sales rose 3%, to $2.17 billion. Per share earnings rose 14%, to $0.49 from $0.43. That fell just short of the consensus forecast of $0.50.

The company also offers a tasty dividend; it announced that it is raising its quarterly payout for the 47th straight year, from $0.15 to $0.17. The new yearly rate of $0.68 yields 2.27%.

3. What?s turkey without stuffing? Two years ago, Investing Daily?s Jim Fink picked Campbell Soup (NYSE: CPB) as one of his favorite Thanksgiving dinner stocks (Fink also liked Seaboard, above). That?s partly because of his view that the company?s Pepperidge Farm stuffing is tops in the category. Kraft Foods Group?s (NasdaqGS: KRFT) Stove Top stuffing, he wrote, ?is second-rate and pales in comparison.?

As well, Campbell makes broths, stocks and gravies, along with its core soup products, for the U.S. market through its U.S. Simple Meals segment (which supplied 38% of its overall sales in the latest quarter).

Like Hormel, Campbell reported its latest results on Tuesday. In the quarter ended October 28, 2012, its sales rose 8% from a year ago, to $2.34 billion. That mostly reflected its recent purchase of California?s Bolthouse Farms, which produces carrots, salad dressings and juices.

The company earned $245 million, or $0.78 a share, down from $265 million, or $0.82. Without restructuring charges and costs related to the Bolthouse purchase, Campbell?s earnings gained 5%, to $279 million. Per-share profits rose 7%, to $0.88, because it had fewer shares outstanding thanks to its recent buybacks. That was ahead of the consensus estimate of $0.85.

The stock fell slightly in the wake of the earnings report, but it?s still up more than 10% in the past six months. Campbell also trades at a 15.3 times its last 12 months of earnings, roughly in line with the competition. As well, it pays a $0.29-a-share quarterly dividend, for an attractive 3.21% yield.

4. Top off your Thanksgiving feast with Sara Lee pumpkin pie. The iconic dessert brand is now controlled by Hillshire Brands Co. (NYSE: HSH) after Sara Lee spun off D.E. Master Blenders 1753 N.V. (Amsterdam: DE), which sells coffee and tea in Europe, Brazil and Thailand, in June. Sara Lee then took the Hillshire name for its North American business.

Hillshire gets 15% of its sales from desserts and frozen bakery products, though the bulk of its business (85%) is packaged meat. It controls some of the best-known banners in the industry, such as Jimmy Dean, Ballpark and Hillshire Farm.

The company has recently been the focus of takeover rumors, with Hormel named as a potential buyer, along with Tyson Foods (NYSE: TSN).

?Hillshire could be an acquisition target,? Alexia Howard, a Bernstein analyst, told Bloomberg last week. ?It?s high margin. It?s less volatile in terms of profit. The brands bring you more negotiating leverage with retailers.?

As well, there are few other similar acquisition targets in the space. Hillshire?s main competitor, Oscar Meyer, is already owned by Kraft Foods Group.

Cheap Kitchen Cabinet Upgrades That Look Expensive - Articles ...

undefinedIn the hierarchy of kitchen remodeling, replacing cabinets is king?no other improvement does more to transform both the look and function of the space. At the same time, all-new cabinets tend to cost more than any other element and often mark the dividing line between a makeover and a full-blown renovation, complete with a home equity loan and weeks of microwaved meals. But the fact remains that if your kitchen needs some sprucing up, you can't ignore the cabinets. No problem. There are plenty of ways to give yours some love (without letting them know you're working with a small budget).

Painting or Refinishing?Maybe

The most ubiquitous idea for an easy cabinet upgrade has to be painting or refinishing. And this makes sense; it's a lot of hard work, but it can yield a dramatic change at a cost that's dramatically lower than full replacement or even adding new doors and refacing the boxes. But here's a caveat that's a lot less common than the idea itself: Don't expect a factory-quality finish. DIY-painted cabinets have brush strokes and muddled details, and standard paint isn't nearly as durable as the stuff that manufacturers use. Stripping, sanding and refinishing stained cabinets is a ton of work, and getting stain just right takes years of experience (you can certainly wing it; you just need to have realistic expectations). Bearing this in mind, painting or refinishing cabinets often is a good idea if their existing finish is really bad and can't be substantially improved with a good cleaning. So start with that, try on some new hardware (see below), then decide whether repainting or refinishing is really worth it. If so, take the time to do it right, and you'll likely be happy with the results.?

New Hardware

Replacing cabinet hardware is an absolute no-brainer. Start with the knobs or pulls for all the doors and drawers. You can also replace the door hinges if they're visible, but often you can get away with keeping the old ones. Choosing new hardware is fun, and replacing the pieces is so easy and satisfying that you'll feel like those happy can-do couples in the TV ads for home improvement stores. This job really is that simple?IF you select new hardware that fits the old holes in your cabinets. Of course, it's possible to make new holes, but this is harder than it seems and works well only if you're repainting the cabinets. And by the way, spackle or caulk won't hide the holes under paint; they'll shrink on you every time. You have to use a non-shrinking wood putty or an auto body filler, both of which require sanding for a flush surface.??

Pullout Shelves

If you've peeked into a cabinet showroom or catalog in the past decade or so, you know that these days it's all about pullouts. Pullout shelves, pullout trash and recycling bins, pullout spice organizers, pullout everything. And unlike cold granite slabs, this is a kitchen trend that's not going away, because pullouts are a great idea. They're also absurdly pricey when you buy them off the shelf.

Making your own pullouts is really quite doable. A pullout shelf essentially is a wooden tray with drawer slides. A pullout trash bin can be a tray (on which you set the bins) or a slide-out shelf with holes cut in it (for suspending the bins by their rims). Look around online for good tutorials on building your own pullouts, and keep in mind that slides can go at the sides, as with standard drawers, or underneath, using "undermount" slides, which can be surprisingly strong. For a quality look, build your pullout frames with solid hardwood or furniture-grade plywood, such as Baltic birch (call a lumberyard or hardwoods supplier for info; the box stores don't carry premium plywood).

Wood Panels to Glass

If you have traditional frame-and-panel cabinet doors, you swap out the wood panels for glass, creating an expensive-looking accent for little more than the price of the glass alone. The hardwood frames of these doors provide the structural integrity; the panel actually "floats" inside grooves in the frame's edges. Use a router and a straight-cutting bit to cut out the backside of the grooves, remove the panel and add a piece of precut glass, securing the glazing with plastic glass clips and screws. The glass can be plain, textured, frosted, beveled, etc., but for safety it's best to use tempered glass, which you can buy from any local glass company. Mixing glass-front cabinets and plain wood cabinets is also an attractive option. A good example is Dallas architect Eddie Maestri's farmhouse-style kitchen, in which a Dallas carpenter installed both glass-front and plain panel cabinets, creating a rustic and light look.

Task and Accent Lighting

All well-designed kitchens have good lighting, and this always includes undercabinet lights. The nice thing here is that you don't have to splurge for nice-looking fixtures because you don't have to look at the fixtures. That is, if you have standard cabinets with faceframes; with Euro-sytle frameless cabinets, you might want to spend extra for more attractive lighting, but there's no reason to go overboard because the fixtures aren't prominent. Standard wall cabinets have a recess underneath that nicely hides "slimline" fluorescent fixtures. This is all you need to create an upgraded look and vastly improve the usability of your countertop work areas. Don't go for halogen puck lights, which are inefficient and put out way too much heat both below and above the cabinet's bottom panel. As for above-cabinet accent lighting, the same no-see-um benefit applies. This can be as simple as snaking a rope light on top of a bank of cabinets or adding a few uplights to play off the ceiling. In any case, it's the light?not the fixture?that creates a custom look.?
