Partnering with the Functional Teams: If you have more than one person on the Change Management team, I recommend assigning each person to one or more functional teams. ?This does two things. ?First, this provides one point of contact for each functional team. ?This way, they don't need to try to guess who on the Change team to contact when they have questions. ?It also reduces the number of e-mails and phone calls the Change lead has to deal with each day. ?Second, it helps ensure at least one person on the Change team will have a deep understanding of each functional area, which will come in very handy for developing communications and training.
Design Feedback Workshops:?If the functional teams haven't planned these on their own, recommend they be added to the plan. ?If they have planned these, volunteer to help. ?Design Feedback Workshops are conducted with the end users who provided input into the system design. ?Once the functional teams have incorporated these design suggestions into the system, hold a workshop where you show the completed design to the end users. ?This gives them an opportunity to tell the team if the design meets their expectations. ?You may also find that once they see the design, it helps them better understand the system and helps them identify new or better refined design points.

Phase Kick-off/Lessons Learned: In the Analyze Phase, I talked about the need for a project kick-off. ?As the project continues, it's important to conduct phase kick-offs, as well. ?These help ensure that everyone on the project team understands the timeline, objectives, and activities for the upcoming phase. ?The kick-off is also a good time to conduct a lessons learned session. ?For more details on connecting an effective lessons learned session, read this earlier post.
Sponsorship:? Partnering with Human Resources: Throughout the project, there will be activities that are best completed in partnership with Human Resources (HR). ?These are activities that impact people's job descriptions, compensation, or team structures. ?If you are ever in doubt, it's a wise idea to find out who is the project's HR representative and have a quick chat with them.
Rewards and Recognition:? If there are people on the project team who are not consultants, chances are that being on the project is requiring them to learn new skills, work longer hours, and take on additional responsibilities. ?These are things that should be recognized and rewarded. ?Work with HR to determine how the project team can do this within the appropriate guidelines of the organization. ?I've seen programs as simple as a Thank You Box, and as complex as a new bonus structure. ?Whichever path you take, make sure that you are rewarding behaviors you want to perpetuate, and providing rewards that are meaningful to the recipients and in-line with company policy.
The Design Phase is a busy one, but it's also very satisfying. ?Don't forget to evaluate how successful the Change program is in achieving its goals, and don't be afraid to tweak the plan as you go to improve your results.

I am your average Jane who comes without any fancy awards or conferral frills. I took my first GMAT in Sep 2010 and scored a dismal 600. The moment the Pearson Associate announced my score I knew I wanted to take the test again, so I did ? in July 2011. Ok, so coming back to the second GMAT ? this time a 660 with an improved quant and verbal percentile. I made peace with the score and was faced with the real deal breaker question ? I was clear about two things ? a) I should not be over ambitious and apply to (touch-me-not) Ivy leagues, though a small part of you will always dreams to be part of Ivy clan- Not me!. B) I knew I wanted to study Human Resource Management. Though, these two criteria?s did immensely shrink the list of my target schools (since only a handful of schools offer HR immersion, Sigh!), but my worries were far from over.
I started to question the prospect of placement in the HR field after I finish business school since clearly I had no work experience to back my choice of HR elective and my apprehension was compounded when my husband?s friends (all working business professional inclusive of a good chunk of Americans too) gingerly explained that I will always be considered as an outsider in the HR function since I come from a different culture and country. Ouch!
That hurt??and for days I kept fiddling with pros and cons but finally, I decided not to let the noise of others? opinions drown out my own inner call. What an irony that I could be such a sourpuss??! On the land governed by Barack Obama who gave us the slogan ?Yes We can?.
Moving on, a side note ? once you decide on what immersion you wish to study I highly recommend that you skim through topics covered under that immersion and see if they cater to your needs of investing your time and money in pursuing an MBA.
Two advantages of doing this exercise are ?
A) You can further trim the list of your target schools.
B) You will be in a better position to explain ?why this school? in essays and interviews and trust me, an insight into school?s curriculum and specific topics that interest you matter.
One of the schools that I did apply to and badly wanted an admit into was ?Vanderbilt ? I like to call it the ?Harvard in HR?. Its HR program is comprehensive and detailed with excellent support from alums and industry and is ranked third after Stanford and Cornell. I worked hard on the essays and applied in Round 2 ? Nov 28 deadline.
While I waited to hear from them patiently, with each passing day the chances of an interview call seemed bleak but my eyes were set on this school. To learn more about the school and its fabric I met one of their current students while she was visiting her family in Boston over winter break. I got great insights and a lot of dough to hold conversations around it in my interview. But I heard nothing from the school!
I also joined in all the web chat sessions organized by the school, the conversations were very enriching. But I still did not hear from the school!

The smile did not last long, a complete shocker in next ten minutes, I receive an email from Vanderbilt that I am denied admission this year, I could not believe what I just received in my inbox, I wrote to Jill asking about the mail to which she replied after 2 full days that It was a mistake and she will get back to me with a decision before Jan 20. Yes, she did revert ? on the afternoon of Jan 19 ? Congrats you are in for 2012!!! Phew!!!

IPFW Pink Out celebrates breast cancer survivors
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) -? IPFW turned pink Saturday with the 5th annual women's basketball Pink Out event. It raises money and awareness for breast cancer, but most off all, it celebrates survivors.
"It gives an opportunity for survivors to be acknowledged and gives them a day of recognition each and every year," Tommy Bell, IPFW's athletic director, said.
More than 60 breast cancer survivors came to a luncheon and then the women's basketball game. At halftime, a special ceremony honored them. Each survivor said how many years she's been cancer-free.
"It makes you feel so special and there are so many survivors. It lets you know how God works. He can save us," Deloris McKee, a 15-year breast cancer survivor, said.
McKee and Josie Hale, who's a five-year breast cancer survivor, have been coming to IPFW's Pink Out event since it started five years ago.
"I love coming here. We look forward to seeing all the people we see but once a year," Hale said.
Seeing other survivors, they say, is inspirational.
"Every little pain you have, it reminds you of cancer. It's the first thing you think about. It's good to have people to talk to and they can uplift you and laugh. That's the main thing. Laugh. That's a good healer," McKee said.
Hale added being around other survivors is encouraging for not only her, but for people still battling the disease.
"This used to be a disease that once you had it, it was over for you. But now, there's hope. Where there's life, there's hope. So, don't give up. Keep hoping because we're here for you," Hale said.
Part of that hope is thanks to research. Money raised at the Pink Out goes to the Vera Bradley Foundation , which donates to breast cancer research.
One dollar from each ticket sold for the game and silent auctions raised the money. Bell said past Pink Out days have raised around $2,500 and he hopes it will keep growing higher.
Fred Toenges Shoes created special pink shoes for the day. Some were up for grabs in the silent auctions and people could even bid on the shoes worn by Bell and Women's Basketball Head Coach Chris Paul.
The annual event also hits home with the team.
"One of our players has a moving story because her grandmother is a survivor. They see as young women that awareness is important to them for their health and wellbeing. "A lot of people are embarrassed because of their cancer. I was when I was first diagnosed, but I'm not embarrassed anymore because it's a miracle that I'm still here. I'm asking all the survivors, if you're out there, come out and show what God can do," she said.

Grandpa-shooting officer had five previous kills
Scottsdale police Officer James Peters has been involved in seven shootings in the past 10 years. Lissette Martinez of NBC station KPNX reports.

The Arizona police officer who shot and killed an unarmed man while he held his baby grandson has been involved in at least five previous fatal shootings, police said.
The officer, James Peters of the Scottsdale police, was on administrative leave Thursday after he killed John Loxas, 50, with a single rifle shot to the head Tuesday. Loxas' 9-month-old grandson, who was in his arms, was unhurt.
"There were at least three officers in position to engage the suspect," Sgt. Mark Clark, a spokesman for the Scottsdale police, told NBC station KPNX of Phoenix. "At least one of the officers thought he saw something in the suspect's hands."
KPNX reported that Peters has now been involved in seven shootings in the past 10 years, six of them fatal. The Arizona Republic reported Thursday that the city of Scottsdale agreed to a $75,000 settlement in 2009 with the family of one of the people Peters had killed; the city denied liability.
New Times, a Phoenix alternative weekly, profiled Peters in 2010 under the headline "'Dirty Harry' in Scottsdale? Badass Cop Bags Four Bad Guys in 10-Year Career."?
Police said that as a former member of the SWAT team, Peters had been involved in the department's most dangerous assignments and that all of the previous shootings had been found to be justified.
In the incident Tuesday, police were called to Loxas' home after a call to 911 reported that he had kicked over a trash can and threatened the owner when he complained. The caller said Loxas was walking around the neighborhood with his grandson and a weapon.?
"We have a neighbor out here that pulled a gun on us," the caller said. "He's got a baby in his arms. He's got a gun, and he cocked it."
Loxas had returned home by the time police arrived, and he answered the door with the baby in his arms. Peters and another officer told investigators they saw something in Loxas' hand, and when he turned, Peters fired a single shot, killing Loxas instantaneously.
Afterward, detectives determined that Loxas wasn't armed. But they did find several weapons in the home, KPNX reported.

New ability to regrow blood vessels holds promise for treatment of heart disease
ScienceDaily (Feb. 16, 2012) ? University of Texas at Austin researchers have demonstrated a new and more effective method for regrowing blood vessels in the heart and limbs -- a research advancement that could have major implications for how we treat heart disease, the leading cause of death in the Western world.
The treatment method developed by Cockrell School of Engineering Assistant Professor Aaron Baker could allow doctors to bypass surgery and instead repair damaged blood vessels simply by injecting a lipid-incased substance into a patient. Once inside the body, the substance stimulates cell growth and spurs the growth of new blood vessels from pre-existing ones.
Aaron Baker is an assistant professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering.
The method has been tested successfully on rats, and findings of the study were published recently in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
"Others have tried using growth factors to stimulate vessel growth in clinical trials and have not been successful," said Baker, a faculty member in the school's Department of Biomedical Engineering. "We think that a major reason for this is that previous methods assumed that the diseased tissues retained the ability to respond to a growth stimulus. Our method basically delivers extra components that can restore growth factor responsiveness to the tissue of patients with long-standing clinical disease."
The ability to regrow blood vessels could prove crucial to treating chronic myocardial ischemia disease, which affects up to 27 million patients in the U.S. and leads to a reduction of blood flow in the heart and lower limbs -- ultimately causing organ dysfunction and failure.
Central ischemia, which affects the heart, occurs when the coronary vessels that feed blood to the heart become blocked or narrow because of a buildup of fatty deposits called plaques. Such plaques are typically the result of a prolonged unhealthy diet or smoking, and factors such as age, high blood pressure and diabetes increase the risks of the disease, Baker said.
Doctors have typically treated ischemia by physically opening the closed artery with a stent or surgically rerouting blood flow to the poorly perfused tissue. Both methods have limitations, however, and are not effective long-term.
The new method introduced by Baker and his research team builds on a promising revascularization approach that, up until now, has shown limited efficacy in clinical trials for treating human disease.
The method combines a growth factor -- a substance capable of stimulating cellular growth, proliferation and cellular differentiation, as well as healing wounds -- known as fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF-2) with a lipid-embedded receptor to enhance its activity.
A challenge for scientists and engineers, however, has been getting FGF-2 to bind with cell receptors -- the very molecules often found on the surface of the cell that receive chemical signals and direct activity in the cell from outside sources.
To overcome this, Baker's method embeds the growth factors in synthetic lipid-based nanoparticles containing a coreceptor known as syndecan-4. The nanoparticles containing co-receptors that, when delivered with the growth factor, enable improved cell binding so that the growth factor can direct the targeted cell to divide, proliferate and form new cells for tissue regrowth.
The incased substance was injected into rats with hindlimb ischemia and stimulated a complete recovery from the ischemia in just seven days.
"We hope this research will increase our understanding of how tissues become resistant to revascularization therapies and may lead to more effective treatments for this widespread and debilitating disease," said Baker, who was recognized last year with the National Institutes of Health Director's New Innovator Award.
